His artist project started 2 years ago when he created his 12-piece ‘Soul Tribe’ of Drums, Keys, Bass, Guitar, 4 Horns, 2 Backing Vocalists, and 2 Strings. They have since, played a plethora of venues such as Off The Cuff, All Points East Festival, Pop Brixton (BBC Music Day), Boxpark Croydon, Nambucca, The Garage, Union Chapel and a plethora of other venues.
On the 3rd of May, Akin Soul released his first single ‘I Want You’ and we sat down with this budding Jazz master to get a look into the process and inspiration behind the track.
‘I Want You’ was “inspired by Janet Jackson's ‘I get so lonely’. "I love 90s RnB and the whole soulful feel of songs like that. Around the time of writing this song, Steve Holmes, the producer, gave me a progression to work on it – whilst jamming with my friends, I played around with it and 'I Want You' was the result.”
Akin’s goal is for the song to make you “...just bop and sing along...I want people to feel that 90s old school aesthetic again!” The song is an expression of his personality, written 2 to 3 years ago, it represents his playful teenage energy.
Reflecting on how lockdown has affected him as an artist, Akin gave an honest and balanced view. “Lockdown is difficult because I do love my freedom. However, I have been able to discover a lot about my musicianship, artistry, style and have been able to achieve many goals in quarantine. I have managed to also keep writing lots of songs and so I'm keeping pretty creative!”
